Hidden Gems in Birmingham for Food & Drink Fans

Us Brummies know how much the city has changed over the years, but no part more so than the evolving food and drink scene. Sure, we’ve got Michelin star restaurants (the most outside of London, actually) and world-renowned bars these days, but there are so many hidden gems in Birmingham that are well worth seeking out.

In today’s guest post, summer editor Laura McEwan (from Bite Your Brum) is going to give up some of her best-kept secrets and reveal the hidden gems in Birmingham you need to know about. If you love your local and independent bars, restaurants and cafes, this one is for you!

Kopitaim

When it comes to hidden gems in Birmingham, this Malaysian street food café in the Jewellery Quarter is a must-visit. Unassuming with minimal décor, you could easily walk past this café and not think they’d have much to offer – but you couldn’t be more wrong. Family-run and serving up some of the best Nasi Lemak and Mee Goreng you’ll find in Brum, it’s a relaxed setting for a low key dinner with friends. Everything is cooked fresh to order and there’s plenty to choose from on the large menu.

Roberto’s Bar

One of the unsung heroes of the Custard Factory, Roberto’s Bar is a tiny but brilliant haunt for those who love trying the more unusual in beer offerings. The tap list and fridge contents change all the time and you may try something and never see it again, which at least brings a bit of drama to beer tastings. There’s a focus on Belgian beers and Roberto himself is usually on hand to try the latest tipples with you.

Edwardian Tearooms

Like most Brummies I’m guilty of often overlooking some of the best parts of our city - especially some of the touristy locations like Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. But once you’re inside you’ll find one of the best hidden gems in Birmingham. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more beautiful space for lunch or afternoon tea than the Edwardian Tearooms, with its high ceilings and colourful décor. As well as your traditional afternoon teas, for the more fancy among us there’s a champagne option which includes a glass of Piper-Heidsiek.

Hive Café and Bakery

A community hub in the middle of Birmingham, Hive Cafe and Bakery is located in a Grade II listed building in the historic Jewellery Quarter. You can find this pretty cafe on the ground floor of the New Standard Works building on Vittoria Street. Formerly a jewellery factory, only a handful of people seem to know you can eat here, as it’s actually an award-winning vegetarian café. It’s a socially and environmentally responsible venue, growing much of their ingredients on the roof allotment and keeping to an organic-only offering for all seasons. As well as serving well-priced breakfasts and lunches, visitors can take part in craft workshops, enjoy exhibitions, events and connect with the local community. A joy from top to bottom.

Wine Freedom

OK, so this Digbeth bar and bottle shop already has a loyal fan base but it’s amazing how many people still haven’t tried Wine Freedom. A plant-lovers paradise, the venue is full of gorgeous foliage and has a huge natural wine selection. You can do private tastings, drink by the glass or bottle, and they often have pop up food events and collabs. Most recently it was with the fabulous Hampton Manor. It’s best to book because come the weekend it gets very busy. Can’t find the entrance? Just look for a sign. Wink wink.
