Glynn Purnell brings Michelin magic to Oriental cuisine

5 December 2014

*Wing Yip has teamed up with celebrity Birmingham chef Glynn Purnell to drive awareness of Oriental food and add a Michelin twist to food from the Far East.*

With a rich Birmingham heritage, both Wing Yip and Glynn have been at the forefront of the vibrant and ever-growing Midlands foodie scene. They will now work together to develop a series of ‘cook-at-home' recipe cards and articles, encouraging people and restaurants to take a fresh look at Oriental food.

Wing Yip opened its first store in the city in the 1970s, while Glynn has enjoyed national acclaim since helping to launch Jessica's in 2003 which was awarded Birmingham's first Michelin star. Glynn went on to open his own restaurant, Purnell's in 2007, which gained its Michelin star in 2009.

Brian Yip, director of Wing Yip, said:

"We have been working with Glynn for a number of years and we are thrilled to be joining forces to help bring Oriental food bang up to date. We want to show our customers that they can be creative, adventurous and try new foods."

In 2015, Glynn will be back as a judge for a third year for Wing Yip's Oriental Cookery Young Chef of the Year competition which is open to 16-25 year olds training or employed in the culinary industry. The national competition opened for entries at the beginning of September and continually supports and champions up and coming chefs in the UK.

Glynn said:

"Wing Yip boasts an extensive range of products and authentic ingredients which can be used in a range of recipes. On many occasions I have been to the Birmingham store to pick-up a new ingredient and tried it out in the restaurant. It's a pleasure to be working with Wing Yip to not only make Chinese food more accessible for have-a-go chefs at home, but also to encourage restaurants and pubs to widen their foodie offering and give something different to customers."

Wing Yip is the UK's leading Oriental grocer with four superstores in Birmingham, Manchester, Cricklewood and Croydon as well as an online store.
