10 of the best burgers in Birmingham

5 July 2021

To mark National BBQ Week, our summer guest editor, Laura McEwan of Bite Your Brum, is giving you the local lowdown on where to get your hands on the best burgers in Birmingham.

Whether you prefer something big and beefy or a clucking good chicken burger, there’s not many of us who would say no to one. But with them available seemingly everywhere the key is knowing where to go for your fix. Lucky for you guys, Laura loves her burgs. Here’s where you can get some of the best burgers in Birmingham city centre (and beyond) this week.

The Meat Shack

The Meat Shack

In my eyes, a burger from The Meat Shack is pretty hard to beat. I’ve never eaten one and not enjoyed it, but the Buffalo Blue is a firm favourite of mine. If you fancy a kick of spice, go for a Hell Shack and ask for a side of hot chicken bombs. You might not be able to feel your tongue but you’ll be happy.

Original Patty Men

Available both in Digbeth and Strichley, OPM is a staple on the burger scene in Brum. For me, it’s all about the beef here, with the Pineapple Express being my number one. Aside from loads of maple coated bacon (never a bad thing) you’ll get lashings of a sweet/savoury pineapple hot sauce and roquito chillies.

Bonehead

If you like chicken burgers you’ll no doubt already be acquainted with Bonehead. I couldn’t tell you how many of the Buffalo Soldier burgers my husband and I scoffed from here during the various lockdowns but it’s enough to raise your cholesterol levels.

Stackz Burger Shack

Meat Meets Bun

Part of the food offering within Zumhoff in Digbeth, there’s some seriously good burgers to be had from Meat Meets Bun. You can’t go wrong with the Black and Blue here – a mix of Stilton and American cheese combined with crumbled black pudding on a smashed beef patty. Glorious.

Stackz Burgers

This newbie is found between Legoland and Arena, within Sommar Brewery. If you like your burgers extra meaty then definitely grab The PBO – a beef burger topped with slow cooked pork belly and oozy cheese. It won’t make you thin but it will make your eyes roll back in your head briefly.

Flying Cows

While Dan and the gang don’t have a bricks and mortar venue as yet (I’ve tried, believe me) if you see Flying Cows at a Brum food festival make sure you try them out. Even just a basic cheese burger will make your world a bit brighter.

Hot Chix

Now the long-term food residency for The Victoria pub, Hot Chix offers up chicken burgers with the volume turned up. Crispy and crunchy batter makes these really satisfying to scoff.

Plant & Pulse

Plant & Pulse

“But you can’t get a good vegan burger in Birmingham…” Rubbish. Try the pakora burger from Plant & Pulse (in The Minories) and thank me later. Don’t let the fact that it’s plant-based make you think it won’t be a bit filthy, because this little beauty is a spicy dream, especially thanks to the mustard pickled chillies. Will satisfy your junk food cravings while being kinder to the environment – win/win.

Patty Dabblers

Another one for you pop-up fans! Expect to see Patty Dabblers hitting the festival circuit alongside your favourites. The burgers are loaded with toppings and you’ll find beef and veggie options – anyone who can make aubergine sexy gets points from me.

Juju’s Café

Finally, let me introduce you to one of Brum’s best-kept secrets when it comes to a filthy burger. While Juju’s Café (just off Brindleyplace) might be known for brunch, what the regulars will tell you to try is the chicken Kiev burger. If you like the idea of garlic butter dripping from your chin, this one is for you. Also, good for keeping away vampires.

Looks like their are lots of options for best burgers in Birmingham for you to choose from – don’t forget you can find me over on the Bite Your Brum Instagram. Catch up on the latest DineHub Birmingham posts here too.
