Lots to look forward to coming out of lockdown

It's officially Spring and now it's time to get all excited about all the the new bars, restaurants and hotels opening in Birmingham this year.

Check back every day as we unveil the list daily one by one

#1 The Ark

A new Indian and cocktail bar on John Bright Street opposite Turtle Bay. Looks like a nice place to go for your usual curry favourites, set over two floors, it has a bar, a main dining area, private dining and a nightclub on the second floor. Don't ask me who built it ;)

#2  Domo Hotel

A fabulous new boutique hotel opening in late May for leisure and business travellers with 5 stylish suites to choose from. Oozing a huge amount of style and personality this is small but perfect.

#3 Grounded Kitchen

A new eatery in Moseley Village opened yesterday serving delicious Korean inspired, nutritious Buddha bowls.

We loved the Korean inspired decor complete with blossom tree, clean lines, neutral benches and foliage. The food smells delicious and it's really fresh, healthy and looks like sunshine on a plate!

We tried the Buldak Fire Chicken ‘Bul’ meaning Fire and ‘Dak’ meaning chicken - inspired by Korean buldak trucks selling this incredible street dish. The rice base comes with spinach, Korean kimchi, sweet potato, carrots, beetroot, peppers, avocado, fresh chilli, lime, coriander and spring onions.

Our other choice was the Sizzling Gochujang Prawns - their secret blend using Korean red chillies made with rice, spinach, carrots, beetroot, peppers, avocado, fresh chilli, lime, coriander and spring onions and served with Korean Kimchi.

Next time we're going to try the Bulgogi Chicken. Looked yummy.

#4 Haidilao

Rumour has it Haidilao has chosen Birmingham for its third UK site, that will cover 8000 square feet! The Chinese hot pot chain is expected to join Brown’s and Wagamama in @bullring Martin’s Square later this year.

Expect traditional hot pots at every table, and customers will be able to choose from the brand’s renowned soups, as well as cook their choice of meat, vegetables and noodles in the Chinese tradition.

#5 Happy Lamb Hot Pot

A fun do-it-yourself dining experience will be joining The Arcadian. Here at Happy Lamb Hot Pot, you can pick a broth of your choice with a selection of meats or vegetables to dip into it. Thinly sliced or hand-cut variable lamb or beef are delicately presented, homemade prawn paste and BBQ lamb skewers are "must-order" dishes. Also, other seafood, vegetable and noodle platters are always good alongside the broth.

#6 Kouzina in Selfridges

A Greek-inspired street food company will be launching a brand new 50 cover restaurant at Selfridges once lockdown restrictions on hospitality are lifted.

From Street Kitchen Brothers, a West Midlands-based Greek-Cypriot family run business, Kouzina will be the first eatery to serve authentic Greek food at the iconic department store.

We will be able to indulge in Greek Mezze cuisine – including their famous moussaka (as seen on The Hairy Bikers show) souvlaki, stifado, and a range of traditional sweet treats from the Greek Bakery such as baklava and kadaifi!

The restaurant will launch with a click and collect offer until government guidelines allow for indoor hospitality, when customers will be welcomed in for all-day dining.

Paul Polyviou and Chris Butcher, owners of Street Kitchen Brothers, stated: “We’re incredibly excited to be bringing Kouzina to the Selfridges store. Opening a restaurant in Birmingham is something that we have always aspired to do and this has provided us with the perfect opportunity to take our business to the next level. We are extremely passionate about food and we do everything with our customers in mind. We’re absolutely thrilled to finally bring a taste of Greece and Cyprus to the city with our street food and taverna favourites”

#7 Lucarelli in the Mailbox

"May all who enter as guests leave as friends"

From West Brom to Central Brum, Lucarelli are joining the Mailbox family this month and we can't wait to enjoy some fine Italian hospitality on their gorgeous new flower-filled terrace.

Well done Vincenzo Esposito, this place has really upped their game and if you enjoy authentic Italian cuisine coupled with Italian style, then this is the place for you!

Opening in the site formerly occupied by Red Peppers, it's a real sun trap and ideal for enjoying Cicchetti and prosecco in the coming months. Bellisimo!

#8 Luna Springs

There's a new Greek in town! Opening in the Arcadian Centre, the family-style restaurant is due to open in May. The 80 seater restaurant will feature rustic brickwork and blooming bougainvillaeas and will be sure to exude traditional Greek charm and dishes.

#11 North Fish

The renowned Norwegian-inspired seafood restaurant based in Poland, North Fish, has been planning its first UK opening for some time now. Choosing the Birmingham Bullring for its big arrival, North Fish had hoped to begin serving its Norwegian-inspired seafood late last year, so we are eagerly awaiting further details!

#12 Nude Bar & Grill

Don't let the name fool you!  The Nude Bar & Grill is setting up a home in the Colmore Row area and will be launching a family-style restaurant.

So watch this space!

#13 Qavali

A fine dining concept offering dishes from across the Persian Empire is set to open at Brindleyplace this year. Qavali, named after a style of Sufi devotional singing and originating from the Arabic word qual meaning “to speak”, will offer a range of dishes inspired by Turkish, Arabic, Persian and Indian cuisine. The restaurant will open in the space previously occupied by Coast to Coast on the corner of Broad Street and Oozells Square.

The menu will be full of rich new dishes, which have been inspired by a diverse region, which for many remains relatively unexplored in terms of cuisine. Qavali will provide a high-dining experience within an environment to match and will help further broaden the horizons of future guests.

#14 Rosa's Thai Cafe

Paradise development is attracting many great brands, such as Dishoom and Vinoteca, with plans to welcome Rosa’s Thai Café this year. This third location will continue to take inspiration from the founder’s memories of Northern Thailand, bringing Brum many authentic delicacies.

# 15 Robata

Independent Japanese restaurant Robata have submitted plans to open their first location outside of London here in Birmingham replacing Chilango which closed due to the Covid pandemic.

Robata offers izakaya-style Japanese food, inspired by an ancient tradition of fishermen taking hot coal boxes with them out to sea to warm up their food whilst they fished. Their menu features a range of dishes, including a variety of sushi and skewers, and they also offer Japanese cocktails and alcoholic spirits, and of course, a wide range of Japanese sake. Very exciting!

#16 Shibuya

A brand new 8-seat underground Japanese bar is coming to Birmingham this year. Taste the flavours of Japan at Shibuya Underground as they indulge you with their immersive cocktails.

#17 Tonight Josephine

Party with Josephine down on Stephenson Street! She is gagging for a Razzle Dazzle and who are we to take that away from her. It seems her number 1 babe Bo Jo is missing a night out too; we knew he wouldn’t last long before the craving for a bottomless brunch got on top.

#18 The Rainbow

The iconic Birmingham pub is making a much-needed return this summer. The adored pub located on Digbeth High Street will be coming back bigger and better. Guests have a lot to look forward to with this current refurbishment project. Watch this space for more information!
